Eixample Derecha
The Eixample Derecha o “Eixample Dreta” in Catalan denotes the right hand side of the wealthy and well planned area of Barcelona known simply as El Ensanche or El Eixample. Literally translating as “expanse” or “extension” it is a utilitarian name describing the fact that this area of Barcelona was created so that the old city of Barcelona, Ciutat Vella, could expand. Along with Eixample Izquierdo, Eixample Derecho real estate is most undeniably the most sought after real estate in Barcelona.
Features such as gloriously high ceilings and floor to ceiling wooden shutters, are common amongst most properties in the Eixample Derecho. The carefully planned grid system was put into practice in the mid 19th century by the architect Idelfonso Cerdá allowed for open spaces, low buildings and lots and lots of trees. Eixample Derecho is home to the most famous architectural creations of Barcelona. Gaudi’s Casa Batlló, La Pedrera or Casa Milá and La Sagrada Familia are undoubtedly the most famous, however the whole district is infiltrated with wonderful examples of modernist architecture.
